When a project calls for "DOT specified" or "DOT approved" geotextile fabric, it means the fabric has to meet the geotextile requirements published by that state's department of transportation. Almost every state spec is written against one national baseline: AASHTO M288, the standard specification for geotextiles used in highway applications. State DOTs adopt M288 and then layer on their own strength, elongation, or property adjustments, which is why a fabric approved in one state usually meets the requirement in most others.
