Tip: minimum depth should be at least 3× your stone size (e.g. ½" stones → minimum 1.5" depth).

💡 Tips:
  • Stone selection: Use washed and cleaned angular stones — angular edges interlock better for durability, and clean stones ensure proper bonding.
  • Minimum depth: Depth should be at least 3× your stone size (e.g. ½" stones → 1.5" minimum depth).
  • Light-colored stones? Use Clear formula — it contains UV additives and won't discolor your stones.
  • Mix ratio: Do not exceed 20–24 oz of liquid per 5-gallon bucket of stones (~50 lbs). Too much liquid causes foaming.
  • 🌡️ Temperature: Install only when temperatures will remain between 50°F and 90°F for at least 24 hours after application to ensure proper curing.
  • ⚠️ Installing over existing concrete? Add a roll coat to the concrete and while it is wet add the mixed Gravel-Lok with gravel to help it stick to the concrete.

Coverage rates — Mix: 1" = 37.2 SF/gal · 1.5" = 24.8 SF/gal · 2" = 18.6 SF/gal · Roll coat = 90 SF/gal  |  Pour: 1 light pour = 19 SF/gal · 2 light pours = 14 SF/gal.

Buyer's Guide · Resin-Bonded Gravel

Gravel-Lok: Lock Loose Stone Into a Permeable Surface

Gravel-Lok — "gravel glue" — is a polyurethane binder that bonds loose pea gravel and decorative stone into a firm surface. No more shifting gravel, ruts, or stone migrating into the lawn.

It stays porous, so water drains right through. The main planning question is simple: how much do you need? That's what the calculator on this page is for.

Because it binds stone instead of sealing it solid, a Gravel-Lok surface stays permeable: it reduces stormwater runoff, recharges groundwater, and runs cooler than asphalt. With 1/8" to 1/2" stone it's firm enough to be ADA-compliant and safe for wheelchairs and bikes, and it works with all kinds of decorative aggregate — pea and river gravel, granite, marble, even recycled glass. It's made in the USA, and it goes just about anywhere loose stone does.

01 Where It Works

Pathways & Patios

A stable, low-maintenance walking surface that won't scatter underfoot.

Residential Driveways

The look of loose gravel without the ruts, washboarding, or migration.

Tree Pits & Borders

Permeable surrounds that let trees and beds breathe while staying tidy.

French Drains & Stonescaping

Decorative drainage and accents that hold their shape over time.

03 How It Goes Down
Pouring Gravel-Lok binder over loose stone
Pour on, spread, and let the binder flow into the stone.

The process is straightforward but unforgiving of shortcuts. Start with a sound base — clean, level concrete or asphalt that has fully cured (about 7 days for concrete, 28 for asphalt). Block paving and wood aren't recommended, because they crack and move underneath. With clean, dry, dust-free stone in place, pour the binder on with a watering can, spread it evenly, and trowel out any bumps. Let it dry overnight, then apply a second coat and let that cure overnight too. The one rule that breaks more installs than any other: dust-free, dry aggregate — if the stone is dirty or damp, the resin won't bond.

04 How Much Do You Need?
Installed Gravel-Lok bonded gravel pathway
Coverage shifts with stone size and the number of coats.

Coverage comes down to two things: the size of your stone and the number of coats. Finer aggregate has more surface area, so it soaks up more binder; larger stone needs less. Plan on two coats for a durable bond. Rather than guess, enter your square footage and stone size into the Gravel-Lok Calculator above and it estimates the gallons you'll need — then round up so you're not stopping mid-pour. Gravel-Lok ships in a 1-gallon trial size, 5-gallon pails, and 50-gallon drums for large jobs.

05 Test the Ratio First

Before you commit to the whole area, dial in the binder-to-stone ratio on a test patch: apply about 20 oz of binder to 5 gallons of stone over a small surface and wait 15 minutes. If the base beneath the stone is wet, your ratio is right; if it's still dry, add a couple more ounces and retest. A 10-minute check now saves a saturated, slow-curing mess later.

06 Quick Planning Checklist
  1. 1

Pick the formula: Clear keeps light stone its natural color; Amber is warmer and cheaper — never Amber on white stone

  2. 2

Check the base: clean, level, fully cured concrete or asphalt — not block paving or wood

  3. 3

Size the job: finer stone and two coats need more binder — use the calculator and round up

  4. 4

Mind the weather: dry, dust-free stone and no rain within 24 hours; cover it if needed

  5. 5

Test the ratio on a small patch before doing the whole surface

Gravel-Lok comes in Clear and Amber, in 1-gallon, 5-gallon, and 50-gallon sizes: the Clear 5-Gallon and Amber 5-Gallon cover most residential projects, the 1-gallon trial is perfect for a test patch, and 50-gallon drums handle large or commercial work — all made in the USA with free shipping.
