01 What Is Dock Piling Wrap? Overview

Dock piling wrap is a heavy-duty HDPE barrier that encases a wood piling to seal it off from the water and the organisms that destroy it. Wrapped tightly around the piling and fastened in place, it forms a tough, impermeable sleeve through the splash and tidal zone — the stretch of the piling that takes the most punishment from waves, wet-dry cycling, and marine life.

Wood pilings fail from the outside in. Marine borers such as shipworms and gribbles tunnel into submerged timber, while repeated wetting and drying at the waterline rots the surface over time. A piling wrap cuts off the oxygen and access those organisms need and shields the wood from the waterline decay that shortens a dock's life, extending the service life of both new and existing pilings.

02 Why Wrap Your Pilings Benefits

Protection

Stops marine borers

The impermeable HDPE sleeve seals the piling off from shipworms, gribbles, and other borers, denying them the oxygen and access they need to tunnel into the wood.

Longevity

Extends piling life

By shielding the splash and tidal zone from wet-dry decay, the wrap slows the surface rot that shortens a dock's life — protecting both new and existing pilings.

Value

Cheaper than replacement

Wrapping in place is a fraction of the cost and disruption of pulling and re-driving pilings, making it a practical way to protect the investment already in the water.

03 30 Mil vs. 60 Mil Compare

Both thicknesses are heavy-duty HDPE and install the same way. The difference is how much abrasion and impact the wrap can take over its life.

30 Mil

  • The lighter-duty option
  • Well suited to calmer, sheltered water
  • Lower cost per roll
  • Full borer and waterline protection

60 Mil

  • Twice the thickness for heavier duty
  • Better for exposed sites, debris, and ice
  • Greater abrasion and impact resistance
  • The choice for the longest service life
04 How to Wrap a Piling Installation
1

Measure the piling

Measure the circumference of the piling and the height of the zone you need to cover — typically from below the mud line up through the splash zone — so you can choose the right wrap height and cut length.

2

Clean the surface

Scrape away marine growth, loose splinters, and debris so the wrap seats flat against the wood. A clean surface lets the sleeve seal tightly with no gaps for water or organisms.

3

Wrap and overlap

Wrap the HDPE around the piling, overlapping the seam so it fully encloses the wood. Cut from the 100-foot roll to length and pull it snug for a continuous, gap-free sleeve.

4

Fasten in place

Secure the wrap with fasteners along the seam and at the top and bottom edges so it stays tight through tides and wave action, sealing the piling for the long term.

06 Frequently Asked Questions FAQ
what does dock piling wrap do?

It seals a wood piling inside a heavy-duty HDPE sleeve, cutting off the oxygen and access that marine borers need and shielding the wood from waterline decay. The result is a piling that resists the boring and rot that would otherwise shorten a dock's life.

how long do wood dock pilings last, and does wrapping help?

Unprotected wood pilings can be attacked by marine borers and waterline rot within just a few years in active waters. Wrapping the splash and tidal zone slows both, extending the service life of the piling well beyond what bare wood would give.

should I choose 30 mil or 60 mil?

Both are heavy-duty HDPE and give full borer and waterline protection. Choose 30 mil for calmer, sheltered water at a lower cost, and 60 mil for exposed sites, floating debris, or ice, where the extra thickness adds abrasion and impact resistance for a longer service life.

can I wrap pilings that are already in the water?

Yes. Dock piling wrap protects both new and existing pilings. Clean the surface of marine growth and debris first so the wrap seats flat, then wrap, overlap the seam, and fasten it in place for a tight, gap-free seal.

what height and length do I need?

Wraps come in 18", 24", 30", and 36" heights on 100-foot rolls. Measure the piling circumference and the height of the zone you want to cover, then choose a height that spans the splash and tidal zone and a length that wraps the circumference with an overlap.

can I get a sample before ordering a full roll?

Yes. Both the 30 mil and 60 mil wraps offer a 3" × 3" sample piece so you can check the material before committing to a full 100-foot roll.
