Mirafi 140NL Case Study

THE SCENARIO

In Grand Rapids, MI, a homeowner wanted to install landscape separators in their backyard, The separation of landscape cover and the underlying soil is a well-known issue. It doesn’t matter if you are using wood mulch, stones, or processed rubber used on playgrounds, the underlying soil will seep into the landscape cover in due time.  The soil supports a growth medium for unwanted weeds and if left unattended, the soil will eventually take over the landscape cover which the homeowner does not want to see.

DESIGN

There are many geotextiles that will work in this situation.  Hinging on the expected loading and underlying soil, the correct geotextile can be chosen quite easily. In this situation, lightfoot traffic was the design load, sand was the base, and installation did not need the use of machinery.

Considering all factors, it was decided a lightweight nonwoven geotextile fabric should be used. They chose TenCate Mirafi® 140NL. In cases where fine soils are present, a monofilament such as  Mirafi® FW woven geotextiles would be needed. Where there would be heavy traffic or heavy equipment used during installation,  Mirafi® HP geotextile would be the better choice.

CONSTRUCTION

The area was leveled while weeds and unwanted brush were removed. A weed killer was applied to reduce potential weed growth surfacing from below the geotextile.  Please note, while geotextile will reduce the growth of weeds from below, they will not be totally eliminated. The geotextile was laid flat over the entire area and wood mulch was applied at an acceptable depth.

PERFORMANCE

Mirafi® 140NL offered the desired separation and reduced the thickness of mulch that was required. In turn, this reduced the costs of the project paid by the homeowner. The desired beauty will last longer by using geotextiles. Also, the area has stayed level over the entire summer while nicely withstanding a high level of foot traffic.
