Case Study: Mirafi FW700

THE SCENARIO

The City of Termal in Coachella Valley, California needed serious water and sewer upgrades that were looked into for solutions offered by geosynthetics.

Coachella Valley requested a geotextile that would be long-lasting and offer a controlled flow rate. It was mandatory that the new sewer system would be dependable and long-lasting by using the correct materials.

DESIGN

The product chosen by the  Coachella Valley Engineering Department was TenCate Mirafi® FW700 woven geotextile because they believed this product would be perfect for the project.  Mirafi® FW700 was also chosen for its durable properties and excellent flow rate of 18 gal/min/ft2

The strength and flow rate offered by Mirafi® FW700 was considered the perfect choice for the project.  The engineer believed this product would give the necessary level of flow they required.  It was determined TenCate Mirafi® FW700 would deliver the long-lasting and high performance they needed for years to come.  Mirafi® FW700’s components were extremely important to deliver the best drainage platform for the application.

CONSTRUCTION

To start with, the contractor dug out the old sewer pipes and installed sheer walls for a safe working area. They chose to use a pipe rail apparatus then placing the roll cores over it. They brought the product down then placed a layer of  Mirafi® FW700 at the bottom of the trench onto the subgrade.  AT this point, the contractor filled 8” of ¾” crushed aggregate on top of the geotextile.  Afterward, they lowered the new sewer pipe into the trench on top of the Mirafi® FW700 along with ¾” crushed rock. Once the pipes were securely in place,  ¾” of crushed aggregate was placed over the pipe, and then the trench was filled. Mirafi® FW700 was cut and wrapped around the rest of the aggregate creating a continuous layer between the soils above and below the ¾” aggregate. This offered the necessary platform for drainage and filtration that was required for the project.

PERFORMANCE

Using TenCate Mirafi® FW700 offered the strength, drainage, and filtration needed by the city for its water and sewer upgrades. What TenCate Mirafi® FW700 offered:

Excellent strength to guarantee the 3/4” aggregate would remain in place.

The 18 gal/min/ft2 flow allowed for good filtration and drainage.

Mirafi® FW700 provided separation of the native soil and the 3/4” aggregate.

The completed project resulted in water and sewer improvements for the project that will last for many years and give enhanced water and sewer services for the City of Thermal.
