Not sure which turbidity curtain you need?

This Tough Guy® Type 1 DOT Water Baffle keeps suspended sediment contained in calm, protected water so the surrounding area stays clear. EPS flotation holds the top at the surface, and galvanized chain ballast keeps the skirt hanging vertically through the water column. It is rated for sites with light winds and currents under one foot per second, including ponds, shallow lakes, small streams, and marshes.

All seams are heat sealed, and the vertical edges are reinforced with 5/8 inch diameter poly rope so the baffle holds its shape on the job. Stakes or concrete blocks may be needed to anchor it in position. Sections connect with rope lacing or nylon ties, which are supplied separately.

PRODUCT INFO:

  • This is the most frequently specified barrier in the TOUGH GUY® barrier line. It is recommended for construction sites located in protected areas that are exposed only to light winds and to current velocities of less than one foot per second.
  • This type of site may include ponds, shallow lakes, small streams and marshes.
  • Anchorage consisting of stakes or concrete blocks may be required to maintain the barrier in its required position. Barrier sections are connected by rope lacing or nylon ties and supplied separately.

Why Buy Turbidity Curtains from Paramount Materials?

  • We only sell the Tough Guy brand commercial-grade curtains which are made in the USA. Widely regarded as the “go to brand” for quality and strict adherence to stated specifications.
  • We do not sell "no-name" or "off-brand" curtains. These economy curtains often claim to meet spec but due to oversees manufacturing variances sometimes do not, leaving the installer exposed to potential fines and project delays.
  • When you call, we answer. When you call Paramount Materials you get a live person quickly, ready to help with product or order questions. (M-F 5:00 am - 3:00 pm Pacific Time)

What Is a Water Baffle?

Overview
Tough Guy Type 1 DOT floating water baffle for sediment control

Type 1 DOT water baffle for calm, protected water

This water baffle is a floating barrier built for open water on construction sites. It is also called a turbidity barrier, a floating turbidity barrier, or a sediment curtain. It has a flotation boom on top, an impervious fabric curtain that extends down underwater, and galvanized steel chain sealed into a hem along the entire bottom to keep the curtain vertical.

Turbid water stays inside the contained zone long enough for the sediment to settle, which keeps the surrounding water clear. Tough Guy floating turbidity barriers meet or exceed all DOT specifications and are BABA (Build America, Buy America) compliant.

02

Not a Tank Baffle: An Open-Water Barrier

Know the Difference

"Water baffle" can also mean the baffles inside water tanks, tankers, and aquarium filters, which control sloshing or flow inside a closed container. This product is different. It floats on open water and prevents silt and sediment from migrating into watercourses during construction.

03

Where to Use a Water Baffle

Applications

Type 1 is recommended for protected areas exposed only to light winds and to current velocities of less than one foot per second, such as:

Ponds Shallow Lakes Small Streams Marshes

For stronger wind or faster current, compare our Type 2 and Type 3 turbidity curtains.

3 Rules for an Effective Water Baffle Installation

Design
  1. Retention time: Silt and sediment must be contained in the retention area long enough to settle.
  2. Particle size: The particle sizes present must actually settle in the time your construction conditions allow.
  3. Current control: Current in the containment area can't be strong enough to carry particles past the barrier before they settle.

Water Baffle Sizing and Setup

Installation

Water baffles come in 50' sections in depths from 3' to 10'. The end hems are sealed around a rope and grommeted, and sections connect with rope lacing or nylon ties, which are supplied separately.

Barriers installed in moving water, tidal conditions, or windy areas must be anchored in place. Stakes or concrete blocks may be required to hold the baffle in its required position.
