Not sure which turbidity curtain you need?

This Tough Guy® Type 1 DOT Pond Baffle keeps silt from dredging, grading, or outfall work in one place, so it settles out instead of spreading across the pond. Its commercial-grade fabric has a 410 x 410 lb./in. grab tensile and a 100 x 100 lb. tongue tear. It is designed for calm water with currents under one foot per second.

EPS flotation provides 13.5 lb./ft. of buoyancy in fresh water, and galvanized chain ballast keeps the skirt hanging vertically below the surface. The baffle also works in shallow lakes, small streams, and marshes. Anchoring with stakes or concrete blocks may be required to keep it where you set it.

PRODUCT INFO:

  • This is the most frequently specified barrier in the TOUGH GUY® barrier line. It is recommended for construction sites located in protected areas that are exposed only to light winds and to current velocities of less than one foot per second.
  • This type of site may include ponds, shallow lakes, small streams and marshes.
  • Anchorage consisting of stakes or concrete blocks may be required to maintain the barrier in its required position. Barrier sections are connected by rope lacing or nylon ties and supplied separately.

Why Buy Turbidity Curtains from Paramount Materials?

  • We only sell the Tough Guy brand commercial-grade curtains which are made in the USA. Widely regarded as the “go to brand” for quality and strict adherence to stated specifications.
  • We do not sell "no-name" or "off-brand" curtains. These economy curtains often claim to meet spec but due to oversees manufacturing variances sometimes do not, leaving the installer exposed to potential fines and project delays.
  • When you call, we answer. When you call Paramount Materials you get a live person quickly, ready to help with product or order questions. (M-F 5:00 am - 3:00 pm Pacific Time)

Pond Baffle: The Type 1 Turbidity Curtain for Ponds

When dredging, grading, or outfall work stirs up silt, a pond baffle keeps it in one place so it settles out instead of clouding the whole pond.

Why Ponds Need a Baffle During Construction

Overview
Type 1 turbidity curtain used as a pond baffle

Type 1 DOT pond baffle for calm water

A pond is a small, closed body of water. Once construction disturbs the bottom or the banks, there is little current to carry the cloudiness away, and the whole pond can turn murky quickly.

A pond baffle floats on a flotation boom and hangs an impervious fabric curtain into the water, with galvanized steel chain sealed into the bottom hem to keep it vertical. It holds the turbid water in one area long enough for the silt to settle, which protects the rest of the pond.

02

Why Calm Ponds Are Ideal for a Turbidity Curtain

The Science

A turbidity curtain doesn't filter water. It buys time. Silt has to stay inside the retention area long enough to settle, and different particle sizes take different amounts of time to settle one foot, even in calm water. Fine particles take longer than coarse ones.

That is why ponds suit a Type 1 baffle so well. With little current moving through the containment area, particles have the time they need to drop out before they can migrate past the barrier.

Pond Baffle Installation Basics

Installation
  1. Choose your depth: Pond baffles come in 50' sections in depths from 3' to 10'. Pick the depth that suits the water at your containment line.
  2. Connect sections: Join sections end to end through the #4 brass grommets on the rope-reinforced edges with rope lacing or nylon ties (supplied separately).
  3. Deploy the baffle: EPS flotation holds it at the surface, and the chain ballast keeps the curtain hanging vertically.
  4. Anchor it in place: Anchorage consisting of stakes or concrete blocks may be required to maintain the baffle in its required position.
