Not sure which turbidity curtain you need?

This Tough Guy® Type 1 DOT Floating Baffle Curtain is the barrier most frequently specified in the Tough Guy line. Six-inch square EPS floats keep it riding at the surface, and 1/4 in. galvanized chain ballast holds the weighted skirt straight down. It is built for sediment control on construction sites in protected water with light winds and currents under one foot per second.

The skirt is 18.5 oz. per sq. yd. vinyl/polyester with all seams heat sealed. Flotation gives 13.5 lb./ft. of buoyancy in fresh water and 14.4 lb./ft. in saltwater. Brass grommets and rope-reinforced edges let you join sections with rope lacing or nylon ties, which are supplied separately.

PRODUCT INFO:

  • This is the most frequently specified barrier in the TOUGH GUY® barrier line. It is recommended for construction sites located in protected areas that are exposed only to light winds and to current velocities of less than one foot per second.
  • This type of site may include ponds, shallow lakes, small streams and marshes.
  • Anchorage consisting of stakes or concrete blocks may be required to maintain the barrier in its required position. Barrier sections are connected by rope lacing or nylon ties and supplied separately.

Why Buy Turbidity Curtains from Paramount Materials?

  • We only sell the Tough Guy brand commercial-grade curtains which are made in the USA. Widely regarded as the “go to brand” for quality and strict adherence to stated specifications.
  • We do not sell "no-name" or "off-brand" curtains. These economy curtains often claim to meet spec but due to oversees manufacturing variances sometimes do not, leaving the installer exposed to potential fines and project delays.
  • When you call, we answer. When you call Paramount Materials you get a live person quickly, ready to help with product or order questions. (M-F 5:00 am - 3:00 pm Pacific Time)

What Is a Floating Baffle Curtain?

Overview
Tough Guy floating baffle curtain with EPS flotation

Type 1 DOT floating baffle curtain

A floating baffle curtain is a fabric barrier that rides on the water's surface and hangs a weighted curtain below it. Floating baffles, also called baffle curtains or floating turbidity curtains, prevent silt and sediment from migrating into watercourses during construction.

They hold turbid water in a controlled zone where the sediment can settle, which keeps the rest of the water body clear. Tough Guy floating turbidity barriers meet or exceed all DOT specifications and are BABA (Build America, Buy America) compliant.

Type 1 vs. Type 2 vs. Type 3 Floating Baffles

Choosing a Type

Floating turbidity barriers come in three DOT types. Match the type to the water conditions at your site:

This Product

Type 1 DOT: Calm Water

Protected areas with light winds and currents under one foot per second, such as ponds, shallow lakes, small streams, and marshes.

Moving Water

Type 2 DOT

Medium waters moving up to 1.5 knots with waves up to three feet, including rivers, harbors, and ports.

Heavy Duty

Type 3 DOT

The most heavy-duty type, for demanding conditions near rivers, bays, harbors, and inter-coastal waterways.

Sections, Depths, and Anchoring

Installation

Floating baffle curtains come in 50' sections in depths from 3' to 10'. The end hems are sealed around a rope and grommeted, and sections connect with rope lacing or nylon ties, which are supplied separately.

Floating baffles installed in moving water, tidal conditions, or windy areas must be anchored in place. Stakes or concrete blocks may be required to hold the curtain in its required position.
