Our Flagstone Pebble Binder is made to secure gravel, forming a sturdy, porous surface that adapts seamlessly to various applications and settings. This binder effectively bindes different types of gravel, creating a cohesive and stable surface that is both visually appealing and functional.

Material Composition
This binder is formulated with polyurethane, known for its superior durability and outstanding performance. This composition ensures that the binder holds up against environmental stresses and regular use.

Advantages Over Alternatives
Utilizing polyurethane, this product offers considerable benefits over the more economical, water-based gravel binders. Polyurethane binders provide enhanced resilience and sustain their structural integrity over extended periods. They are particularly suited for areas with frequent foot or vehicular traffic, where longevity and minimal maintenance are crucial. In contrast to water-based binders, which necessitate regular reapplication due to their reduced strength, this binder delivers a durable, long-lasting solution. It is ideally suited for constructing pathways, driveways, and other high-traffic zones where enduring quality and durability are paramount.

Gravel-Lok is a Polyurethane Based Gravel Binder.
Why it matters: Polyurethane binders perform far better long term than low-cost water based gravel binders. Additionally, due to their decreased strength, water based binders are not suitable for regular foot or vehicular traffic without frequent re-application.

Gravel‑Lok vs Water‑Based Binder — Top 5 Reasons

Top 5 Reasons to Use Gravel‑Lok Over Less-Expensive Water‑Based Binders

01 Superior Strength & Durability

Gravel‑Lok’s high‑performance (non‑water‑based) binder locks aggregates together more effectively than low‑cost water‑based options. The result is a tough, resilient surface that withstands heavier pedestrian and light vehicle traffic without breaking down, cracking, or loosening.

02 True Permeability

Cheaper water‑based binders can clog or seal the surface, reducing infiltration. Gravel‑Lok maintains high porosity and permeability so stormwater passes through, reducing puddling and runoff and helping with LEED and EPA Phase II stormwater goals.

03 Long‑Term Cost Efficiency

Initial costs are offset by far less maintenance and re‑application. Low‑grade binders degrade with UV, freeze‑thaw cycles, and use—leading to frequent repairs. Gravel‑Lok’s longevity makes it more cost‑effective over the life of the installation.

04 Environmental & Aesthetic Benefits

VOC‑free and designed to preserve the natural stone look while keeping it in place. Water‑based binders often leave a cloudy film, discolor, or fail to hold gravel—causing messy, uneven surfaces. Gravel‑Lok enhances both appearance and function.

05 Proven Track Record & Versatility

Trusted across landscape, municipal, and commercial installs—from paths and patios to tree surrounds and drainage. Performs across climates and use‑cases, offering the reliability that cheap alternatives can’t match.

What a Flagstone Pebble Binder Does

A flagstone pebble binder is a moisture-curing resin that coats and locks clean, dry pebbles or gravel into a cohesive matrix. The result is a durable, permeable surface for joints and infill around flagstones that resists raveling, migration, and weed intrusion—without sacrificing the natural stone look.

  • Permeable by design: supports on-site infiltration and reduces runoff.
  • Cleaner underfoot: less stone scatter onto lawns, beds, and entries.
  • Comfort & accessibility: firm textures achievable with 1/8″–1/2″ washed aggregates and proper base prep.

Where It Fits Best (and Why)

Use a flagstone pebble binder for patios, steppers, paths, and terraces, and for joints between flagstone/stone slabs. It’s also well-suited to tree pits, planters, drip edges, and decorative stonescapes where you want a natural look with everyday usability and minimal upkeep.

How the Binder Creates Stability

As the resin cures, it forms bonds at stone contact points, producing a cohesive yet porous matrix. This limits stone migration, reduces rutting and footprints, and maintains a uniform texture that’s comfortable for walking and mobility aids—when paired with a free-draining base and edge restraints.

Advantages
  • Stable joints with a natural appearance
  • Permeable surface—less ponding and runoff
  • Lower maintenance vs. loose or sand-set infill
Design Tips
  • Use washed, dry pebbles for best bonding
  • Target 1/8″–1/2″ stone sizes for firm textures
  • Install edge restraints and a free-draining base

Installation Best Practices (Step-by-Step)

  1. Base & edges: Build a compacted, free-draining base; install edge restraints around the field and at borders.
  2. Aggregate selection: Use clean, washed, dry pebbles in the specified size range.
  3. Application: Follow coverage rates; evenly coat and blend; fill joints/infill zones without over-saturating.
  4. Finish & cure: Level/trowel for uniform texture; protect from traffic, rain, and debris during cure.
  5. Reinforcement (optional): In higher-load or turning areas, add a cellular/load-support grid beneath the infill layer.

Benefits at a Glance

  • Permeable & durable joints and infill
  • Low maintenance—less raking, less migration
  • ADA-friendly textures with proper stone size and base
  • Design flexibility across stone colors and blends

Case Study: Flagstone Terrace Retrofit

Setting: A restaurant courtyard with flagstone pavers needed stable, clean joints that still looked natural.

Challenge: Sand-set joints tracked onto dining areas, washed out during storms, and encouraged weeds.

Solution: The team installed resin-bound pebble joints over a free-draining base, with reinforcement at service routes and turning areas.

Outcome: Joints stayed intact through repeated storm events with dramatically reduced maintenance. Staff reported less sweeping and improved accessibility for carts and strollers.

Performance varies with base preparation, aggregate size/quality, climate, and installation practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a flagstone pebble binder permeable?

Yes. The bonded matrix remains porous, allowing water to drain through to a free-draining base and reducing surface runoff.

What pebble sizes work best?

Clean, washed aggregates in the 1/8″–1/2″ range typically produce firm, accessible textures. Always start with dry stone for reliable bonding.

Can I use it on existing joints?

Existing material may need to be removed or cleaned to ensure washed, dry pebbles and a sound base. Good prep is essential for long-term performance.

Where should I add extra reinforcement?

Consider a cellular or load-support grid at entrances, service routes, or tight turning areas to minimize rutting and shear.

How much maintenance is required?

Minimal. Expect occasional sweeping and periodic inspections of edges and drainage. Compared to loose or sand-set infill, upkeep is significantly lower.
