Case Study: Mirafi HP270 – The Challenge

Windsor High School's owner wanted to replace the old natural turf field with a new synthetic grass sports field. The old field had constant issues caused by the poor soil conditions. They decided by replacing this old field with a new synthetic grass field would be a good choice because it would be less expensive to keep up while offering a uniform surface for sports.

The Design

The engineer decided to go with TenCate Mirafi HP270 high-performance geotextile because of its flexibility for meeting the requirements of the site. This product offered separation between the rock and subbase layer while serving as reinforcement for the subgrade.

With a water flow rate of 50 GPM/sq.ft, they decided to go with Mirafi HP270 for the drainage fabric in the french drain system beneath the sports field. They realized using just one geotextile for the needs of the entire field would make it easier to order and install.

Construction

They wanted to ensure the construction would be completed by mid-October so the Windsor Jaguars could play their first homecoming game on the new field. Selecting Mirafi HP270 for all 3 site requirements of separation, reinforcement, and drainage, they were able to redistribute the materials in a timely manner with less waste than choosing three different geosynthetics for the different site requirements. Not only did the project finish on time, but also under budget thanks to versatile Mirafi HP270. Stevenson Supply was awarded the project and suggested an innovative way for the installation of the fabric for the drainage structure as well as the separation fabric for the subgrade and the penetrable rock over the fabric.

Mirafi HP270 arrived in packaging for fast and easy distribution. Also, it would be easier for cutting and placing the fabric for odd-shaped or curved locations. As there were strict requirements for the placement of the rock over the fabric, they placed the rock through their paving machine over the entire sports field area. The Mirafi HP270 woven geotextile performed perfectly while placing the section over it.
