Mirafi BXG geogrids deliver strength, long-term performance, reliability and quick installation for base reinforcement for paved roads, construction haul roads, foundation reinforcement, working platforms on weak subgrades, and secondary reinforcement for soil retaining structures.

FUNCTIONS

Confinement - The ability of a geosynthetic to restrain lateral movement from a soil or aggregate through friction or mechanical interlock.

Philadelphia Produce Market Reinforcement

The Philadelphia Regional Produce Market had absolutely no room for expansion which could cost Pennsylvania losing one of its most historic sites. Being in business for approximately 4 generations, they employ around 1,500 people and is one of the largest produce markets in the United States. The produce market provides food as far north as Canada and south to North and South Carolinas in the U.S.

The Challenge

Located in Brownfield, the site was originally a combination of 5 junk and scrap yards. To clear out the site they had to remove over 400,000 tires and scrap metal including automobiles, trailers, and buses.

The challenge was to construct a roadway over very soft soil on the 63-acre site. The surface would have to be strong enough to support tractor-trailers for the 228 enclosed truck bays within the 667,000-square-foot facility.

The Design

Due to the very poor soil on the site, the engineer decided they needed a base reinforcement to support the heavy truck loads on a daily basis. Mirafi® BXG11 Base Reinforcement Geogrid was chosen for its incredible strength at low tensile strain.

Construction

Building over the soils proved to be a challenge unto itself due to the low California Bearing Radio strength values. On top of that, Hurricane Bill was racing up the eastern coast and depositing several inches of rain over the site for 3 solid days. By using Mirafi® BXG110, the contractor was able to keep the site on the set work schedule and not lose any production. Despite the severe weather conditions, construction was much faster and easier than expected. It only took two construction workers to place the geogrid rolls while dump trucks and bulldozers placed recycled concrete base course in 12-inch lifts for the parking areas and 16 inches for the truck lanes and loading duct areas.

The Results

Without Mirafi® BXG11, the owners would have faced significant costs for excavating and replacing the sub-base materials. Mirafi® BXG11 helped keep the project on schedule and moving forward. With these new buildings in place, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania now has 175 new jobs and the Philadelphia Regional Product Market will continue to prosper and grow into the future.
