TENCATE MIRAGRID® XT UNIAXIAL GEOGRIDS:

TenCate Miragrid® XT uniaxial geogrids are high performance woven polyester and polymer-coated geogrids used for soil reinforcement. TenCate Miragrid® XT uniaxial geogrids are used in Mechanically Stabilized Earth applications including internally reinforced walls, segmental retaining walls (SRW's), and steepend slopes. What You Should Know About Miragrid 2XT

The call to action regarding this project was redeveloping a decommissioned quarry. The owners of the quarry were required to bring it back to a more natural state before it could be sold. On top of that, they discovered the quarry had accidentally infringed upon a regional parkland that sat next door to the quarry.  The owners of the quarry were required to bring this part of the property back to its original state before giving it back to the Park District.

The Design

Part of the project required the construction of  60’ - 70’ high 1:1 (H:V) slopes to hide the presence of the old quarry. The steepened slopes would be unstable without adding geosynthetic reinforcement to create a reinforced soil mass. The design for the reinforced steepened slope required placing geogrid reinforcement horizontally within layers of compacted fill. For both stability and safety on the slope, primary geogrid reinforcement with long-term design strength of 3,000 lbs/ft and 3,700 lbs/ft was needed. The design also required a biaxial (two axes) geogrid for secondary surface reinforcement of 1,000 lbs/ft. The faces of the completed slope were treated with erosion control measures to prevent surface erosion before permanent vegetation could be established.

Construction

The distributor of TenCate offered Miragrid® geogrids because of the lightweight, flexibility, and tough quality for easy installation during the slope's construction.

They used Miragrid® 7XT and 8XT as the first reinforcement and  Miragrid® 2XT as the secondary reinforcement.

Construction began in June 2009 with a deadline of October 15, 2009. This date would also be the start of the rainy season in Northern California. Due to easy installation using Miragrid® 2XT geogrids, the contractor was able to finish the project on time and under budget.

Performance

Using Miragrid® geogrids to construct the reinforced steepened slope (RSS) was a very economical way to bring the quarry back to a natural condition. Over 50,000 square yards of  Miragrid® geogrids performed perfectly for supporting the RSS.
