TENCATE MIRAGRID® XT UNIAXIAL GEOGRIDS:

TenCate Miragrid® XT uniaxial geogrids are high performance woven polyester and polymer-coated geogrids used for soil reinforcement. TenCate Miragrid® XT uniaxial geogrids are used in Mechanically Stabilized Earth applications including internally reinforced walls, segmental retaining walls (SRW's), and steepend slopes. TenCate Miragrid® XT uniaxial geogrids provide high, long-term design strengths (LTDS) and excellent soil interaction. Miragrid 8XT – Case Study

The design for the new wine process facility required wastewater detention ponds the size of three football fields. The ponds would be constructed for containing and treating the dregs of the wine processing at the facility.  In order to comply with state requirements of water quality, the berms needed reinforcement to protect the ponds.

The Design

Originally, the design required the grid lengths to extend 27-feet outside the base of the berm and 10-feet into the pond area. There would have a significant overlapping on all corners of the ponds and considerably increase the necessary material using the specified geogrid.  Reed & Graham, Inc is the local distributor of TenCate® Geosynthetics. TenCate® gave technical help to the contractor and engineer on the project. Based on the requirements of the design, the contractor presented and was accepted by the engineer for TenCate Miragrid® 8XT geogrid as a working equivalent to the specified geogrid. The reason for the engineer's decision was based on the high tenacity polyester encapsulated in the PVC coating, offering a high strength geogrid with high durability and low creep features. The engineer decided that the features of  Miragrid® 8XT were perfect to provide high seismic resistance for the berms.

Construction

Teichert, Inc. decided buying the master rolls would save on both time and money.  Miragrid® 8XT's master rolls were precut to the needed lengths while a large bank of soil was in the process of being built. To reduce the waste of material they used longer lengths of master rolls. The 12-foot roll widths saved on overlaps at the corners, saving costs for the contractor and the owner of the project. Once they reached the elevations, the geogrid was rolled out by hand without using staples or pins to keep it in place. After the placement was completed, they resumed placing fill and compacting over the geogrid with conventional scrapers.  The procedure was performed for five layers and three ponds.

Performance

The high strength at low strain features of the TenCate Miragrid® geogrid made it a perfect choice for seismically stabilizing the berms. The wider and longer rolls helped prevent waste to a minimum and save on costs for both the owner and contractor.  The performance of the geogrid went beyond the expectations of the engineer and shortened the construction time of the project.
