Miragrid 24XT Case Study

In Mason County, WA, the Purdy Creek Bridge was used to move traffic along US101 and cross over the Skokomish River. During the initial design, the bridge's elevation was too low so during flooding, the water would crash over the bridge. The waters flooding the bridge caused serious conditions for drivers so US 101 was often shut down.

There have been several studies taken by Mason County, Tacoma City Light, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regarding the lower  Skokomish River basin. Studies were also performed by the United States Geologic Survey, the Skokomish Indian Tribe, and the US Army Corps ofEngineers.

The studies offered several alternatives for improvements in the valley. The most important being the reconstruction of the Purdy Creek Bridge. The reconstruction would include increasing the elevation span so water could pass under the bridge even during high flooding events.

In 2004, the State Legislature gave WSDOT the job to construct the US 101 roadway and replace the bridge, allowing floodwaters to pass under the bridge and let the highway remain open during these times of flooding.

The Design

Work started in early 2005 and it was quickly realized it would be no easy project. The soil in the area of the Purdy Creek Bridge was extremely saturated and likely to lose strength which could lead to serious problems if there was geological change turning the soil into liquid. The engineers had to come up with a plan while controlling differential settlements of the underlying subgrade soils.

The design engineers took into account extremely high soil loading conditions along with safety factors resulting in the bridge design. They took into consideration ways to reinforce the subgrade walls using high-strength geosynthetics. The engineers finally decided on  Miragrid® 24XT which is considered one of the strongest geogrids made in the US for reinforcing the subgrade. Ultimate Tensile Strength of 370.3- KN/M with a Long Duration Design Load of 202.9- KN/M was offered by Miragrid® 24XT. This strength is more than enough to build a stable platform for the bridge approaches. They decided on a multi-layer approach by placing  Miragrid® 24XT approximately every 0.5 meters until the subgrade was stable.  It took them 4 layers to complete the job. The geogrid was place parallel with the road to a length of 30.48 meters.

Construction

Construction started in 2008 and was believed the bridge would be completed in late 2009. The project replaced the existing bridge with a concrete structure supported on a geogrid mattress.

The new bridge would be higher and longer than before which would lessen the risk of closures due to flooding or high waters.  The contractor started placing  Miragrid® 24XT during the spring of 2009. They cut the  Miragrid® 24XT into 30.5-meter long sections and placed each layer perpendicular to the bridge abutment wall.  Crushed rock was placed directly on the Miragrid® 24XT then compacted to create a stable platform for the bridge load support.

Zip ties were used along with a 0.3-meter overlap to keep the grid in place while continuing to move on the crushed rock placement. The engineer completed the geogrid placement on the southern approach and then repeated the same steps of geogrid placement on the northern approach.

The section of US 101 over the Purdy Creek experienced many closures due to floodwaters running over the road and repairs due to pavement washouts and bridge scour-related damages when the creek overflowed washing away the soil around the bridge footings.  The new bridge and roadway were designed to stop the flooding of US 101, improve safety for travelers while stopping traffic delays during storm surges. The new bridge was built to provide more than 50 years of service, unlike the previous bridge that needed to be constantly repaired and maintained.

It cost over $15,000,000 for construction and design for the project.  Originally, the biggest concern was the fear of a serious bridge failure during a flooding event.  Miragrid® 24XT played a critical role by strengthening the subgrade and creating a stable platform that is excellent for all bridge approaches.

Performance

The bridge is now up and running and the performance is excellent. The bridge has been monitored from the very beginning of construction and there have been no issues. On top of the county saving on construction costs, there have been absolutely no maintenance costs.
