TenCate Miragrid® XT uniaxial geogrids are high performance woven polyester and polymer-coated geogrids used for soil reinforcement. Miragrid 10XT Case Study

The Challenge

Facing East above the subdivision on 39th Way South in SeaTac, Washington offers a breathtaking view of Mt. Rainier. Its glacier slopes rise far over the forested hills below. The volcano summit rises 14,417 feet making it the fifth largest mountain in the lower 48 states.  This incredible view has sparked the development of a private access road along with custom-built homes.

The Design

They connected the MSE walls and slopes due to the steep grade and limited access.  Rockery Boulder Walls are very popular in the area because of their availability and aesthetic appeal. Unfortunately, rockery boulders stacked by themselves do not provide the necessary lateral restraint for safety from overturning and sliding. The answer was TenCate’s Miragrid® geogrid wrapped MSE walls to conform with the lateral earth loads with rockery boulders used only for the MSE wall that faces the steep slope using Miragrid® geogrid soil reinforcement. The completed MSE wall is a 14-feet high rockery MSE wall with a 30-feet steep slope above and 14-feet high rockery MSE on top.

Construction

Using the stepped process, rockery boulders are stacked while Miragrid® geogrid is placed horizontally in the fill and wrapped up inside the boulder face, and entrenched back 4-feet into the fill. The cobbles were layered vertically 2 to 4 inches in size and placed between the wrapped geogrid face and the back of the rockery boulders as filler material. The MSE backfill was made of well-graded granular soil, so separation fabric was not needed in the geogrid wrap.

Construction of the MSE slope was created using an overbuild process to have compaction at the final slope face. During the process, the contractor pushed fill beyond the finished slope face and the embankment fill was constructed as an oversteepened slope. The contractor placed the geogrid approximately four inches inside the finished slope face to avoid unnecessary geogrid damage during the trimming process. As the slope increased in height, the contractor trimmed back the oversteepened slope face to the finished slope surface grade.

If any geogrid is confronted during the trimming process, the geogrid will easily trim off from contact with the construction trimming equipment without pulling out of the soil face. After the slope is done, any exposed geogrid may be hand-cut and removed for aesthetic appeal.

Performance

A multi-tiered MSE structure was completed using Miragrid® geogrid soil reinforcement. The structure was made of rockery-faced Miragrid® geogrid wrapped MSE walls separated with a Miragrid® geogrid reinforced steepened slope. The completed project provides a private access road on a steep hillside to the custom homes with amazing views of Mt Rainier off in the distance.
