Geogrid Soil Reinforcement is a biaxial geogrid used for paved and unpaved roads, parking lots and other applications where stabilizaing and reinforcing the soil is needed. It is made of extruded punched polypropylene plastic. This product is resistant to naturally occurring soil chemicals such as acids and alkalis. This geogrid is made by Tencate, and is a permanent solution that will not break down easily to natural biological processes.

PRODUCT SUMMARY

  • Reinforcement Strength: High tensile modulus properties per ASTM D6637 for base reinforcement applications. For structures with dynamic short-term loadings, Mirafi® BXG geogrids offer high strength at low strain and are designed for maximum bearing capacity and shear resistance.
  • True biaxial strengths: Mirafi ® BXG geogrids are biaxial grids that exhibit high tensile strength in both longitudinal and transverse directions, making them suitable for base course reinforcement and soil stabilization applications.
  • Durability: Superior damage resistance from moderate to severe stress installations.
  • Soil Interaction: Superior soil confinement resulting in greater load distribution. A combination of grid structure and polymers create optimum soil-grid interaction.
  • Seams: Panels can be sewn together in the factory or field, providing cross-roll direction strength to facilitate installation

PRODUCT INFORMATION  - TENCATE MIRAFI BXG GEOGRIDS:

APPLICATIONS

Mirafi BXG geogrids deliver strength, long-term performance, reliability and quick installation for base reinforcement for paved roads, construction haul roads, foundation reinforcement, working platforms on weak subgrades, and secondary reinforcement for soil retaining structures.

FUNCTIONS

Confinement - The ability of a geosynthetic to restrain lateral movement from a soil or aggregate through friction or mechanical interlock.

Soil Reinforcement - The synergistic improvement of a total system’s strength created by the introduction of a reinforcing geosynthetic (that is good in tension) into a soil and/or aggregate system (that is good in compression but poor in tension).

Case Study - West Hynes Tank Farm, Long Beach, CA

The Challenge

Oil refineries and storage yards must increase their capacities to meet today's demands.  West Hynes Tank Farm in Long Beach, CA is located at 5900 Cherry Avenue between the 405 and 91 freeways. The Tank Farm reached out for help to increase its facilities for the supply and demand of crude oil.

A new 250,000-barrel crude oil tank with a 205-foot diameter was designed at the tank farm. The tank is located just north of the entrance ramp over a spill containment dike. The weight of this oil tank is so enormous that it had to be cautiously evaluated for foundation soils and develop a comprehensive foundation plan.

The Design

Investigation of the soil revealed that the native soil was not able to carry a heavy storage tank load. The water table was 12 feet below the existing grade. One feasible option was to have the storage tank located on piles but that would be very expensive. Other issues included potential seismic movement as this area is rated the highest UBC Seismic Zone due to the nearby Newport-Inglewood Fault.

In 1933, Long Beach experienced a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that left behind massive destruction to the city and port facilities. Another concern was seismic shaking is a threat of soil liquefaction in sandy soils and was recently found in some fine-grained soils. Liquefaction is an action that can turn sand into liquid caused by shaking while exposed to water infiltration.

This can be a serious issue due to the high ground water table. The chosen design was over-excavation and removal of the unsuitable soil and replace it with geogrid gravel reinforcement. The soil was removed at a depth of 10 feet and the subgrade was proof-rolled and prepared for placement on the geogrid-reinforced gravel platform.

Installing Geogrid at Job Site

Geogrid being installed for Soil Reinforcement

The Solution

Mirafi® 1120N nonwoven geotextile was placed on the subgrade and a series of 12-inch thick gravel layers were placed in full by end-dump and push-out methods. A total of 7 geogrid layers of  Mirafi® BXG12 biaxial geogrid were installed in one-foot vertical lifts. The geogrid was placed 30 feet beyond the 205-foot diameter tank footprint. An 18-inch overlap was used on roll edges and ends. Then the one-inch minus gravel was dumped, spread, and compacted on the  Mirafi® BXG12 geogrid.
