PRODUCT SUMMARY

  • Strength: Biaxial strength to provide uniform design strengths and facilitate one layer installation for secondary reinforcement and face erosion protection.
  • Vegetation Support: Vegetation testing shows Miramesh® geosynthetics perform better than biaxial geogrids and geotextiles in providing a suitable platform for plant growth. The uniquely designed aperture construction allows for retention of soil particles, while encouraging vegetation growth.
  • Flexible: Easily conforms to the slope or wall face to provide a stable platform vegetation.
  • Design Life: Available in 75 to 100 year permanent design life exposed to sunlight

TenCate Miramesh biaxial geogrids function for:
- Soil Reinforcement
- Confinement
- Erosion Protection

Case Studies

Case Study: Mirafi Miramesh GR For Excellent Drainage

The Challenge

The UltraFlex® Articulating Concrete Block Mat or ACBM is a popular choice for protecting an earthen spillway that was previously lined with grass. Several events of water rising over the top of a barrier have eroded the grass leading to significant damage to the existing spillway.

Design

ACBM systems are popularly used to protect embankments, barriers, or earthen spillways.  To improve performance and help the progress of construction, an aggregate drainage medium is needed as a part of the ACBM system. The first material to be placed directly onto the prepared sand covering was Mirafi® FW300 woven geotextile. It was followed by a 4 to 6-inch layer of clean stone measuring between 1.0 to 1.5-inches in diameter. Now, a layer of  Miramesh® GR is placed on top of the aggregate bedding that the UltraFlex® System was also directly applied.

Submar Inc started testing Miramesh® GR at Colorado State University in 2009. The test consisted of  Miramesh® GR placed between the tapered UltraFlex system and aggregate drainage medium.  Because the tests were very positive, installation in the field began shortly thereafter.

Performance

For a very long time, a plastic geogrid was used instead of Miramesh® GR. Several engineers, as well as contractors, reported a problem that geogrid develops a memory which made installation very difficult to do. Geogrid is a very rigid composition causing workers to walk over the prepared aggregate drainage medium leading to footprints and indentations. Because Miramesh® GR is very flexible, it has eliminated this problem.

Another problem with geogrid, when the ACBM systems become backfilled with topsoil and seed, the large openings in the geogrid  (around 1x1 inch) would start to contaminate the aggregate drainage or the filter layer.

MirameshGR has effectively solved the problem by retaining the underlying aggregate during severe weather conditions or other serious events. These events can prevent the soil from traveling down through the system that can lead to backups or clogging.
