Case Study: About The Major Infrastructure Improvements In Worley,  ID

The state of Idaho has made drastic moves to improve safety, reduce congestion, and create jobs by improving its infrastructure.  A part of their massive plan included the transformation of their existing two-lane highway (US-95) into a four-lane divided highway outside of Worley. The project was pushed forward in an attempt to reduce the costs of construction.

On the downside, the presence of soft saturated wet subgrade could cause a delay in construction and an increase in costs. The poor condition of soil on the site incited The Idaho Department of Transportation to find fast and cost-effective ways to build a new highway over problem areas in a very timely manner.

The Designing Process

An enormous 4-lane divided highway project would require the excavation of over 1.1 million cubic meters of rock and soil then place 500,000 metric tons of fill in order to construct a new subgrade.

The project engineer understood repeated traffic loading would lead to penalties from the soft subgrade moving into the base course and then contaminating it. This would decrease the overall bearing capacity in the road section. To prevent the loss of newly placed aggregate material over the existing soft subgrade and avoid contamination, the engineers realized they needed a geotextile for separation. The project engineer created a unique geotextile specification for the highway project. The specifications would require a 7-8 oz/SY nonwoven geotextile that would be absorbent enough to deplete pore water pressure build-up during the compaction efforts and tough enough to resist damage during installation and compaction.

Construction

For the project specifications and the right choice for use on the highway project, they chose Mirafi® 170N and 180N which proved to be the perfect match. Each roll of geotextile was rolled out by hand over the subgrade.  Each nonwoven geotextile was 15-feet wide and 100-feet long which resulted in the placement of well over 2,000 rolls of geotextiles. Fill was pushed out over the geotextile by bulldozer followed by pan scrapers. Sheeps-foot and smooth drum rollers were utilized for further compaction.

Performance

.After construction was completed, more than one million square meters of  Mirafi® nonwoven geotextiles and 2.5 million cubic meters of soil were placed in order to build the highway project.

The Mirafi® 170N and 180N geotextiles used on the project proved to be cost-effective. The geotextiles installed very quickly and easily in order to reduce the amount of base course required to stabilize the subgrade while keeping separation between the refuse and clean base course.

TenCate’s TM Mirafi® geotextiles sustained the integrity and held up to the high installation stress that would occur during the compaction of the base course over the geotextile layer. The geotextiles will continue to keep the base course clean and separated from the fine-grained soil in the subgrade for the entire life of the roadway.
