PRODUCT SUMMARY

  • High long-term design strengths (LTDS): Miragrid® geogrids have more than 220,000 hours of tension creep testing performed at an independent test laboratory.
  • Credible: Dependable long term strength assured.
  • Cost effective: Creep resistant polyester fibers provide higher allowable tensile strength, minimizing the required number of geogrid layers. Wide rolls significantly reducing placement time, lowering cost.
  • Light weight: Easy to handle and no sharp edges.
  • Flexible, tough: Minimizes movement of soil structure.
  • Strength: Miragrid® geogrids provide the widest strength range, and are the highest strength geogrid material in the market today.

TenCate Miragrid® XT uniaxial geogrids function for:
- Soil Reinforcement

Case Studies:

Miragrid 7XT

Rock County, located in southern Minnesota, closed the very old timber bridge that carried County Road 55 over a regional railroad in 1993. Their plan was to replace the bridge structure until they realized the construction technique and the materials for building a single-span bridge would be very expensive. They needed the bridge to be built in a timely manner and as inexpensively as possible.

The Design

In order to meet their limited budget for constructing abutments, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) chose the Geosynthetic Reinforced SoilIntegrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS). The system was at the center of FHWA’s drive for innovative bridge construction for this kind of abutment. The design was borrowed from some ancient structures that used closely spaced organic materials to reinforce the soil. The standards are the same for this modern version by using angular, crushed gravel with high-strength geotextile or geogrid in continual layers. The interaction of these components would stabilize the structure internally. TenCate  Miragrid® 7XT geogrid and Mirafi®HP570 were the chosen geotextiles for the project.  Even though there are over 100   GRS-IBS bridges up and working in this country, this is the first in the state of Minnesota. It is also considered one of the tallest bridges coming in at 24 feet. The technique for the construction did not require a deep foundation design and could be completed in a matter of weeks. It also used basic earthwork methods with minimal environmental impact.

Construction

TenCate Mirafi® geosynthetics works perfectly for two of the components in the design of the bridge system.   The Reinforced Soil Foundationwas constructed using Mirafi®HP570 to create the needed confinement and reinforcement for the base support for this structure. It consists of select gravel compacted and encapsulated in the Mirafi®HP570 geotextile fabric to function as a necessary foundation for the abutment.

From there, the abutment was built by placing alternating layers of select gravel and geosynthetic reinforcement in 4-inch to 8-inch lifts. The project engineer chose  Miragrid® 7XT for the reinforcement between the compacted fill material due to its strength and excellent construction properties.

Miragrid® 7XT was placed horizontally at 8-inches between the concrete masonry facing units and 4-inches near the top to reinforce the bearing bed. The bearing bed supports the precast concrete bridge beams. Construction was actually quite easy using TenCate materials as well as the simple installation procedures which improved worker safety and a reduction in time to complete the project.

Performance

The bridge is now up and running and the performance is excellent. The bridge has been monitored from the very beginning of construction and there have been no issues. On top of the county saving on construction costs, there have been absolutely no maintenance costs.
