The Reconstruction Project In Palisades, Mesa County In Colorado

The Reconstruction of Main Street in Palisade in Mesa County, Colorado saved on construction costs and time while cutting back on taxpayers' costs.

The Challenge

Palisade in Mesa County has been growing at a pretty good clip which means an increase in traffic. Due to its growth, they needed to reconstruct Main Street in a practical manner and at a reasonable cost. During construction, it was understood there would be soft soil and shallow utilities which would make construction difficult.

The geotechnical investigation revealed various soil traits with the first borings showing a moist dense sandy gravel and the rest of the borings showing a moist soft to rigid thin clay.  Laboratory testing indicated the native clay soils were slightly plastic and had a tendency to build up under loading at the current density. The California Bearing Ratio (CBR) was determined less than 2%.

The Design

The engineer understood there would possibly be soil stability issues so included a stabilization design in the plan so the contractor would know how to deal with soft spots. The original design required the removal of 24 inches of subgrade material. By redesigning the stabilization section with a layer of   TenCate Mirafi® RS280i woven geosynthetic, using TenCate’s Miraspec software, the engineer was able to reduce the sub-base to 13 inches. This was an attractive thought due to a reduction in aggregate thickness and a way of keeping construction above the utilities.  Including a layer of  Mirafi® Rsi geosynthetic for stabilization, the engineer could redesign the unreinforced pavement section, to speed up construction and give the town a saving in costs. This is based on 420,500 ESALs, 4 inches of asphalt over 15 inches of the aggregate base course.  The reinforced design using MiraSpec software brought about 4 inches of asphalt over 9 inches of aggregate base course over one layer of Mirafi® RS580i.

Using Mirafi® RSi geosynthetics, the engineer could reduce the thicknesses of the stabilization section and the actual pavement section. This produced a total aggregate thickness reduction of 17 inches while still maintaining the structural integrity of the roadway section.

Construction

During the entire project, they experienced constant rainfall. The contractor needed to stabilize almost the entire alignment with Mirafi® RS280i and 13inches of aggregate. If the unreinforced stabilization design had been used, the contractor would have needed to install an additional 11 inches of aggregate across the entire project.

Performance

Using a geosynthetic-reduced section resulted in both savings in time and costs. Using Mirafi® Rsi-Series the contractor could install geosynthetics and maintain a minimum of one foot of overlap. The geosynthetic reinforced sections provided for faster construction due to less excavation, less aggregate to transport and install, and not needing to excavate into utilities.  This decreased the construction schedule and generated fewer interruptions for local businesses.

Summary

Due to the reduction in excavation and aggregate section thicknesses, it was estimated that the geosynthetic reinforced design provided around $60,000 in cost savings in construction. Using these savings by the community saved taxpayer’s dollars.
