Determining How Much Piling Wrap is Required

  • To determine how much piling wrap required for your project calculate the circumference of each piling (multiply the diameter by 3.14) and add 6” for overlap.
  • For shallow water applications the 60” piling wrap is ideal and can typically protect the entire submerged portion of the piling.
  • For deeper waters where more than 60” of the post requires wrapping the 36” wrap can be used to vertically to wrap the post at any length required. (if the circumference of the post is 32” or less)
  • We recommend that the piling wrap is fixed to the post using 1-1/4” stainless steel ring-shank roofing nails. (can be purchased locally at a hardware store) Each nail should be installed every 2” along the material seams.

Dock Piling Wrap

Piling Wrap protects your dock pilings from cracking, and chipping as well as helps to keep sea life from growing on the piling which eventually causes structural damage. The wrap offers great protection to extend the life of the wood and avoid costly replacement. Piling wrap is made of extremely durable HDPE plastic that is simply attached to the outside of the piling to keep it safe from marine borers. Marine borers are members of two families, mollusks and crustaceans.  Both families live in seawater and most waterfront structures need to be protected from them. These creatures can penetrate even the toughest wood. You can conveniently install the wraps on pilings that are already in place. Just add wraps to any existing dock to shield it from any further damage.

Piling Protection

Whether you need to protect your existing dock or are in the process of building a new one, it is helpful to know how to protect them.

Treated Wood Pilings

Treated wood is standard lumber mostly suited for ground and water contact. This wood can withstand a great deal of abuse but added protection will greatly increase its lifetime.

Greenheart Pilings

Greenheart is a tropical wood used to help for docks dealing with both freshwater and saltwater. It's prized for its durability and rot resistance but can still benefit from some wrap protection. We highly recommend using a wrap to decrease UV breakdown and its abrasion resistance.

Fiberglass Pilings

Fiberglass is incredibly strong and can withstand whatever outside elements can fling its way. In most cases, all the piling needs is piling caps to ward off birds. This piling does not normally need any additional piling protection.
